This galaxy is an edge-on early-type spiral with a sharp, narrow dust lane (not seen) similar to NGC 7814.
John Herschel discovered NGC 7123 = h3886 on 24 Jul 1835 and recorded "pB; R; vgbM; 20"; a star 9m follows, 8' dist."
400/500mm - 18" (7/6/02 - Magellan Observatory, Australia): at 171x, appears moderately bright and large, elongated 2:1 NW-SE, 2.2'x1.1', fairly sharply concentrated with a bright core and much fainter extensions. Located 5.2' WNW of mag 7.8 SAO 257969.
