John Herschel discovered NGC 6862 = h3812 on 9 Jul 1834 and logged "vF; lE; glbM; 20"." His position is accurate. Member of Abell 3667.

600/800mm - 30" (11/5/10 - Coonabarabran, 264x): moderately bright, moderately large, round, 1' diameter, broad concentration . Situated between a mag 14.5 star 1' W and a mag 15 star 1.4' E. NGC 6855 lies 17' W.
