Albert Marth discovered NGC 6096 = m 307 on 24 Jun 1864 and noted "vF, vS, R, bM." His position is accurate.

400/500mm - 17.5" (7/24/95): very faint, very small, round, 20" diameter, very weak even concentration with a slightly brighter core. Located 2.1' NE of mag 9.4 SAO 84259. A mag 15 star is 1' SW midway between the mag 9 star and the galaxy.
