John Herschel discovered NGC 4950 = h3462 on 3 Jun 1834 and recorded "eF; S; R. The following of 2 [with NGC 4946]; barely perceptible, but a sure observation." His position is less than 1' south of ESO 269-047. MCG does not identify this galaxy as NGC 4950.

600/800mm - 24" (4/12/08 - Magellan Observatory, Australia): fairly faint, fairly small, 35"x25". With direct vision contains a small bright core surrounded by a slightly elongated halo. Located 5.6' NNE brighter NGC 4946. Outlying member of the Centaurus cluster (AGC 3526).
