Wilhelm Tempel discovered NGC 3967 = T V-13, along with NGC 3959, on 19 May 1881. His micrometric position (measured twice) matches MCG -01-30-047 = PGC 37398, as well as his comment "a mag 11 star follows and 3'-4' south."
400/500mm - 17.5" (4/15/93): fairly faint, fairly small, elongated 3:2 WNW-ESE, small bright core. A mag 13.5 star is 1' ENE. A semicircle of five stars with a 4' diameter is about 5' SE. NGC 3959 lies 10' NW. This galaxy does not appear as bright as listed magnitude V = 10.7.
