William Herschel discovered NGC 3906 = H III-715 on 9 Mar 1788 (sweep 816) and noted "eF, pS." CH's reduction is at the west edge of UGC 6797.

400/500mm - 17.5" (4/7/89): faint, fairly large, round, low surface brightness, broad mild concentration. Bracketed by a mag 12.5 star 2.0' S and a mag 13.5 star 2.6' NNE of center. Member of the NGC 3877 subgroup of the M109 group.
