William Herschel discovered NGC 2746 = H III-825 = h552 on 10 Mar 1790 (sweep 938) and recorded "vF, S, R, bM, south of a small star." His position matches UGC 4770.

400/500mm - 17.5" (4/5/97): fairly faint, fairly small, round, 1.0' diameter, very weak even concentration to a slightly brighter core. A mag 12 star is close north [52" from center].
