Albert Marth discovered NGC 2723 = m 138 on 3 Mar 1864 with Lassell's 48" and noted "F, S, R." His position is 1.6' NE of UGC 4723.

400/500mm - 17.5" (3/12/94): fairly faint, small, round, 20" diameter, very small bright core, stellar nucleus. A mag 13 star just 0.6' ENE of center is brighter than the core. Also an extremely faint 15th mag star is just off the NW edge 20" from center.
