Stephane Javelle discovered IC 904 = J. 2-761 on 8 Jun 1893 with the 30-inch refractor at the Nice Observatory.

600/800mm - 24" (5/11/13): moderately bright and large, elongated 2:1 NW-SE, 40"x20", fairly high surface brightness, brighter nucleus. Brightest in a trio (KTG 47) with UGC 8631 1.9' E and CGCG 17-46 2.0' SSW. A mag 9.5 star lies 4.7' SW.
