DeLisle Stewart found IC 4584 = D.S. 426, along with IC 4585, on a plate taken on19 Jul 1900 at Harvard's Arequipa Station. He noted "eF, S, iF."

600/800mm - 25" (4/3/19 - OzSky): at 244x; faint, large, round, ~1.75' diameter, low even surface brightness. Appears like a low surface brightness, diffuse nebulosity in a very rich star field! Forms a close pair with IC 4585 3.7' N. A group of a half-dozenmag 12-13 stars are between the two galaxies.
