Hermann Kobold discovered IC 3976 = K. 2-19 on 13 May 1896 with the 18-inch refractor at Strasbourg and recorded "*14 inv in vF neb."

400/500mm - 17.5" (4/21/90): very faint, extremely small, elongated NW-SE. Located in core of AGC 1656 6.7' SSW of NGC 4874. IC 3973 lies 2.0' N.
