Stephane Javelle discovered IC 254 = J. 1-97, along with IC 253, on 5 Dec 1891. Despite a good position, the RNGC and LEDA incorrectly equates IC 254 with nearby NGC 1065.
400/500mm - 17.5" (12/20/95): appears as an extremely faint, round, barely nonstellar spot just 1.0' SSW of NGC 1065 in a small group with IC 253. It required averted vision to glimpse and appeared less than 10" in diameter.
