DeLisle Stewart discovered IC 2200 = DS 313 on a plate taken in 1900 at Harvard's Arequipa Station. He noted "eF, eS, eE at 65°, bet 2 st, susp." The western of the "2 st[ars]" in the description is likely not a star, but IC 2200A.

600/800mm - 24" (4/4/08 - Magellan Observatory, Australia): at 260x appeared moderately bright, fairly large, elongated 2:1 SW-NE, even surface brightness. A mag 12.6 star is off the northeast end. Forms a close pair with IC 2200A at 1.4' SW. OC 2200A had an unusual appearance with a very bright stellar nucleus (or a star is superimposed) and much fainter extensions SW-NE. This duo is located 15' SW of NGC 2417.
