Isaac Roberts discovered IC 2098 photographically on 17 Feb 1903 with a 20" reflector at his observatory in Sussex, UK.

400/500mm - 18" (12/17/11): very faint, extremely thin edge-on, 1.2'x0.15', oriented WNW-ESE. Generally only the slightly brighter central region was visible, roughly 0.4'x0.15', but occasionally the very thin extensions popped out and the galaxy appeared as a ghostly slash. Viewed at 225x. Located 36' E of NGC 1665 and 32' W of mag 4.4 Omega Eridani.
