Stephane Javelle discovered IC 1761 = J. 904 on 18 Dec 1897 and recorded "vF, vS, R, gbMN." His position is 1' too far north. Harold Corwin comments that "IC 1761 was not seen by Lewis Swift as some have suggested (see NGC 768 for that story)."
600/800mm - 24" (12/22/14): faint, small, round 12" diameter (only the core seen with certainty). Located 3.7' NE of NGC 768 and 5.8' NW of mag 8.3 HD 12134. A mag 14.5 star is 1.6' SW.
