Lewis Swift discovered IC 1738 = Sw. XI-26 on 8 Dec 1895 and noted "eeF; vS; GC 418 [NGC 701] p." His RA is 37 seconds too large and dec is 3' too far south, but this is the only candidate near[NGC 701. Herbert Howe measured an accurate micrometric position in 1899-00 at Denver, so the IC position is very good.
300/350mm - 13.1" (12/22/84): faint, small, round. Forms a pair with NGC 701 5.4' N.
