Heinrich d'Arrest discovered NGC 938 on 30 Dec 1863 with the 11-inch refractor at Copenhagen. His position (measured on 2 nights) matches UGC 1947 = PGC 9423.

400/500mm - 17.5" (1/20/90): fairly faint, fairly small, elongated 4:3 E-W, broad concentration, small faint halo. NGC 932 lies 10' WNW.

600/800mm - 24" (1/1/16): at 375x; moderately bright, fairly small, slightly elongated E-W, 35"x27", small bright core. A mag 15 star is at or just off the southeast edge [35" from center]. NGC 930 is 10' WNW.
