William Herschel discovered NGC 855 = H II-613 on 26 Oct 1786 (sweep 626) and logged "F, S, lE in parallel, bM." His position is 0.2 tmin west of UGC 1718 = PGC 8557.

400/500mm - 17.5" (11/27/92): moderately bright, fairly small, elongated 5:2 WSW-ENE, 2.0'x0.8', bright middle, fainter extensions. A mag 14.5 star is just 30" S. Located just north of the Aries border.
