John Herschel discovered NGC 7820 = h2301 on 24 Sep 1830 and recorded "B; S; mE; vsmbM to a *; 12" long, has a * preceding." His position is accurate.
400/500mm - 17.5" (9/15/90): fairly faint, small, elongated 2:1 NNW-SSE, small well-defined bright core. A mag 13.5 star is 43" SW of center. First and brightest of four in a group with NGC 7825 14' E.
