John Herschel discovered NGC 7796 = h4009 on 11 Sep 1836 and recorded "pB; S; R; gmbM; 25"." His single position is accurate.
600/800mm - 25" (10/15/17 - OzSky): at 244x and 397x; very bright, large, ~1.5'-1.7' diameter. Sharply concentrated with a very well defined intensely bright core and much fainter halo. The core gradually increases to either a quasi-stellar or stellar nucleus. Mag 8.0 HD 224288 lies 20' W.
