John Herschel discovered NGC 749 = h2448 on 27 Sep 1834 and logged "B, S, E, psbM." His mean position from 3 sweeps matches ESO 414-011 = PGC 7191. See Corwin's comments for IC 1740.

400/500mm - 17.5" (10/29/94): fairly faint, moderately large, elongated 2:1 WNW-ESE, 1.5'x0.8'. Fairly sharp concentration with a prominent core and faint extensions. The core brightens to a very small but non-stellar nucleus. A mag 12 star lies 3.9' W of center.
