John Herschel discovered NGC 7289 = h3944 on 25 Sep 1834 and recorded "vF; R: glbM; 20"." His position is just off the northwest side of ESO 405-023.
400/500mm - 17.5" (7/20/96): faint, fairly small, round, 40" diameter, brighter core. Halo grows to 1.0' with averted vision. Brightest in a group with an anonymous galaxy 5.2' SSE and 2.3' SW (star + galaxy?).
