Albert Marth discovered NGC 7270 = m 477, along with NGC 7271 and 7275, on 9 Sep 1863 and noted "vF, S, E." His declination is off by 2' too far north (same offset as NGC 7275).

400/500mm - 17.5" (9/2/89): fairly faint, small, oval E-W, small bright core, stellar nucleus. Collinear with a mag 11.5 star 1.0' WNW and mag 12.5 star 2.4' WNW. In a group (WBL 680) with NGC 7271 3.0' SE and NGC 7275 6.8' ENE.
