Albert Marth discovered NGC 7138 = m 455 on 3 Aug 1864 and noted "vF, vS, stell." His position is 1' too far south.
400/500mm - 17.5" (7/16/88): very faint, very small, elongated NNW-SSE. A mag 13.5 star is at the NW end 27" from the center.
