John Herschel discovered NGC 6942 = h3837 on 9 Jun 1836 and recorded "pB; R; pslbM; 60"." His position is accurate.
600/800mm - 30" (11/5/10 - Coonabarabran, 264x): bright, moderately large, elongated 3:2 NW-SE, 1.8'x1.2', well concentrated with a small bright core surrounded by a smooth, fainter halo. No brighter stars are nearby, though a mag 13 star lies 2' NE.
