John Herschel discovered NGC 6918 = h3830 on 1 Jul 1834 and recorded "vF; attached to a * 12m sf [N.B. - By a diagram made at the time, the star is s p." The note is correct.
600/800mm - 30" (11/5/10 - Coonabarabran, 264x): moderately bright, fairly small, elongated 3:2 N-S, 0.6'x0.4', weak concentration. A mag 13.7 star is barely off the southwest edge, just 24" from center.
