Édouard Stephan discovered NGC 6836 = St XII-92, along with NGC 6835, on 2 Aug 1881 and recorded "vF, pL, R, diff, no central condensation." His position is accurate. Herbert Howe reported "In this nebula, or just on its f edge, is a star of mag 13.5, apparently not noticed by its discoverer."
