John Herschel discovered NGC 6730 = h3771 on 23 Jul 1835 and recorded "vF; S; R; pmbM; 10" diam; south preceding a * 7.8m; a great many st 12 and 13m in field." His position is accurate.

600/800mm - 30" (11/3/10 - Coonabarabran, 264x): fairly bright, moderately large, irregularly round, 1.1'x0.9', high surface brightness elliptical. Located 2.2' SW of mag 7.1 HD 176865, which somewhat hampers the view. NGC 6719 lies 31' NW.
