Auguste Voigt discovered NGC 6675 = Sf 54 = St VII-23 in 1865 with the 31-inch silver-on-glass Marseille reflector. Truman Safford independently found this galaxy on 28 Sep 1866 with the 18.5-inch Clark refractor at Dearborn Observatory and noted "pB, pS, gbM." Édouard Stephan found it again on 27 Jul 1870 and measured an accurate micrometric position. Voigt's discovery was never published and Safford's was published late, so Stephan was credited with the discovery in the GCS and NGC.

300/350mm - 13.1" (7/27/84): faint, fairly small, almost round, fairly low even surface brightness.

400/500mm - 17.5" (7/5/86): moderately bright, moderately large, elongated 3:2 NW-SE, mottled, broad concentration.
