Albert Marth discovered NGC 6586 = m 370, along with NGC 6591, on 27 Jul 1864 and noted "eF, S, R." His position is within 1' of UGC 11164.

400/500mm - 17.5" (7/16/88): faint, small, elongated ~E-W, weak concentration. A mag 13 star is off the south edge 0.6' from center. Forms a pair with NGC 6591 5' SE within the NGC 6579/NGC 6580 group.
