Truman Safford discovered NGC 6575 = Sf 33 = St XII-88 on 7 Jun 1866 and recorded "bN (12m) diam 20"." Édouard Stephan independently found this galaxy on 1 Jul 1880 and called it "mB, S, R." As Safford's discovery was not published until 1887 when the NGC was going to press, Stephan was credited with the discovery.
400/500mm - 17.5" (8/1/89): fairly faint, fairly small, oval SW-NE, bright core. Forms a pair with IC 1277 9' SW. Located 8.0' S of mag 8.2 SAO 66720.
600/800mm - 24" (9/5/18): at 225x and 375x; moderately bright, fairly small, slightly elongated, ~0.6'x0.45', well concentrated with a very bright, very small nucleus. An extremely low surface brightness halo increases the diameter to ~1.0'x0.75'.
IC 1275, a small knot of four faint stars, lies 4' NW. Two mag 14.8 and 15.3 stars separated by 22" were easily resolved and a close mag 16 star was also occasionally visible.
