Albert Marth discovered NGC 6086 = m 306 on 24 Jun 1864 and noted "F, vS, with stellar nucleus." His position is accurate.

400/500mm - 17.5" (5/30/92): faint, very small, slightly elongated N-S, very small bright core, stellar nucleus. A mag 12 star is just off the NW edge 0.7' from center. Located within a group of several fairly bright stars including three mag 10 stars, the closest being 2.8' SW. Forms a pair with NGC 6085 7.2' S and these two galaxies are the brightest members of the AGC 2162 cluster.
