Heinrich d'Arrest discovered NGC 5957 on 29 Apr 1865 with the 11-inch refractor at Copenhagen. His position (measured on 3 nights) is accurate.
400/500mm - 17.5" (6/4/94): fairly faint, moderately large, elongated 4:3 E-W, 2.0'x1.5', weak even concentration to a 15" diameter brighter core. A mag 15 star is at the SE edge 0.9' from center. Located 2.5' SSE of a mag 10.5 star. NGC 5956 is located 19' SSW.
