John Herschel discovered NGC 5814 = h1897 on 13 Apr 1828, while observing NGC 5813, and noted "vF; vS; R." His position is 1.4' too far south.
400/500mm - 17.5" (5/10/91): faint, very small, elongated 3:2 SW-NE, very weakly concentrated but no well-defined core. Forms a pair with NGC 5813 5' NW.
