Albert Marth discovered NGC 5738 = m 284 on 12 Apr 1864 and noted "F, S, bM." His position is accurate.
400/500mm - 17.5" (6/18/93): faint, fairly small, very elongated 3:1 WSW-ENE, 0.9'x0.3'. Two stars mag 14-15 are close following including a mag 14.5 star 1.3' ESE. Forms a pair with NGC 5740 8.3' NE.
