William Herschel discovered NGC 5515 = H III-685 = h1760 on 16 May 1787 (sweep 738) and noted "vF, cS, R." JH made three observations and noted (sweep 73) "F; S; lE; 15"."
400/500mm - 17.5" (5/27/95): faint, small, elongated 4:3 E-W, 0.8'x0.6', weak concentration to a small brighter core. Forms east vertex of an isosceles triangle with two mag 13.5 stars 2.3' WNW and 2.3' WSW.
