Wilhelm Tempel discovered NGC 5411 on 25 Apr 1883 while observing the NGC 5416 group. He first mentions this nebula in the narrative portion of paper VI and gives a very accurate position in discovery list VIII-6.

400/500mm - 17.5" (6/8/02): fairly faint, fairly small, elongated 4:3 NW-SE, 0.8'x0.6', very small brighter core. Situated within a striking field 10' ENE of mag 6.0 SAO 120228 (identified naked-eye). A neat string of four mag 11 stars oriented SW-NE trails from the bright star towards NGC 5411!
