John Herschel discovered NGC 5397 = h3551 on 8 Jun 1837 and recorded "vF; S; R; gbM; 15"." His position is 1' too far southwest.

400/500mm - 18" (5/16/09): faint, fairly small, slightly elongated SW-NE, 40"x35". This galaxy is located on the west side of ACO S753, 31' due west of NGC 5419.
