John Herschel discovered NGC 534 = h2410 (along with nearby NGC 544 and 546) on 23 Oct 1835 and logged "eeF, S, bM." His mean position from two sweeps matches ESO 296-021 = PGC 5215.

400/500mm - 17.5" (11/1/97): very faint, very small, round, ~25" diameter, weak concentration. Slightly fainter than NGC 544 5.8' ENE. First in a group with NGC 544, NGC 546 and NGC 549 (latter not seen). Located 4' NNW of a mag 11 star.
