John Herschel discovered NGC 5335 = h1688 on 9 Apr 1828 and noted "F; irr R." His position is a perfect match with UGC 8791.

400/500mm - 17.5" (5/11/96): fairly faint, fairly small, elongated 4:3 NW-SE [bar], brighter core. Irregular surface brightness and halo fades, so difficult to determine PA. A mag 14 star is 0.7' S of center.
