Édouard Stephan discovered NGC 5285 = St XI-20 on 29 Apr 1881. His position is accurate.

400/500mm - 17.5" (4/28/90): very faint, very small, elongated N-S. A mag 12 star lies 3.0' N. Located 7.1' SE of mag 9.5 SAO 120090.
