Heinrich d'Arrest discovered NGC 516 on 25 Sep 1862 with the 11-inch refractor at Copenhagen. His mean position and offset from NGC 524 (41 seconds preceding) is an exact match with UGC 946 = PGC 5148.
300/350mm - 13.1" (8/24/84): faint, small, slightly elongated SW-NE, even surface brightness. Located about 10' W of NGC 524.
400/500mm - 17.5" (10/17/87): faint, fairly small, very elongated SW-NE, weak concentration. Located 10' W of NGC 524.
