John Herschel discovered NGC 5140 = h3505 on 1 May 1834 and recorded "eF; S; R; gbM; 12"." His position (measured on two sweeps) matches ESO 382-065. The RA in the RC2 and Sky Catalogue 2000 is 1 min too large.
400/500mm - 18" (6/4/05): fairly faint, fairly small, slightly elongated, 0.8'x0.6', weak concentration to center. A mag 13.5 star is close off the east edge. Located 8.5' N of mag 7.0 HD 116788. Outlying member of AGC 3565 and LGG 353 (part of the Centaurus-Hydra supercluster).
