William Herschel discovered NGC 5127 = H II-328 = h1596 on 13 Mar 1785 (sweep 387) and recorded "pB, pS, nearly R, mbM." His position is very poor. JH made three observations and first logged "pB; R; gbM. No other near." His position on this sweep is excellent.

400/500mm - 17.5" (5/19/01): fairly faint, fairly small, roundish but slightly irregular outline, 1.0' diameter. The bright core appears offset to the geometric center. A neat group of four mag 13-14 stars lies 3'-4' NW. Forms a pair with difficult CGCG 161-41 6' N. NGC 5127 is the second-brightest galaxy in Zwicky cluster 1319.6+3135 and brightest in LGG 350.
