John Herschel discovered NGC 5108 = h3494 on 3 Jun 1836 NGC 5108 and noted "eeF. The preceding of 2 [with NGC 5114]." He noted the RA as approximate and his position is 16 sec of time too far west.

400/500mm - 18" (6/4/05): marginal observation. An extremely faint star was sometimes visible at the plotted position. Once or twice this "star" (core of galaxy?) definitely appeared hazy and perhaps elongated. Located 9' E of NGC 5114 and 3.4' WNW of a mag 10.9 star.
