William Herschel discovered NGC 5107 = H III-619 = h1586 on 17 Mar 1787 (sweep 714) and logged vF, S, E near the meridian." His position matches UGC 8396.

400/500mm - 17.5" (6/6/86): fairly faint, edge-on streak NW-SE, weak concentration. A faint star is off the NW edge. Located 13' SSW of NGC 5112. Member of the NGC 5033 Group (LGG 334).
