William Herschel discovered NGC 5089 = H II-327 = h1580 on 13 Mar 1785 (sweep 387) and noted "F, pS." JH made two observations and logged (sweep 65) "pB; pL; gbM." His position on this sweep is within 30" of UGC 8371.

400/500mm - 18" (5/30/03): fairly faint, fairly small, elongated 3:2 WNW-ESE, 0.7'x0.5'. A mag 15 star is at the SW edge (16" from center). Another faint star is off the NE side ~1' from the galaxy. UGC 8377 lies 9' SSE.
