William Herschel discovered NGC 4998 = H III-819 on 26 Apr 1789 (sweep 929) and simply noted "vF". CH's reduced position is 14 tsec following CGCG 271-015 = PGC 45537 (only nearby galaxy).

400/500mm - 18" (6/27/03): very faint, fairly small, slightly elongated, 0.7'x0.5', low even surface brightness. A mag 15 star lies 45" NW. Three mag 10 stars are in the field between 6'-7.5' SW, SSW and SSE.
