William Herschel discovered NGC 4773 = H III-516 on 3 Mar 1786 (sweep 536) and noted "vF, S." CH's reduction is 2' south-southeast of MCG -01-33-041 = PGC 43810. No observations were made by JH.

400/500mm - 17.5" (5/17/90): fairly faint, small, slightly elongated E-W, small bright core. Forms a contact pair with MCG -01-33-042 on the south edge. The companion appeared very faint, very small, round. Located 6' NNW of mag 8.8 SAO 139029. First and brightest of four with NGC 4780 7.3' ENE.
