William Herschel discovered NGC 4662 = H II-643 = h1418 on 17 Mar 1787 (sweep 714) and noted "F, pL, gbM, r." JH logged "pB; pL; R; bM; 40"."

400/500mm - 17.5" fairly faint, moderately large, round, gradually brighter halo, very small brighter core. A mag 14.5 star is 3.1' NW and a mag 15 star 2.5' N.
